What Are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown (often called a "cap") is a custom-made restoration that completely covers a damaged or weakened tooth, extending down to the gum line. Crowns are designed to:
-
Restore a fractured or broken tooth: Providing strength and preventing further damage.
-
Protect a tooth after a root canal: Reinforcing the tooth structure.
-
Cover a severely decayed tooth: When a filling isn't enough to restore its integrity.
-
Improve the appearance of a discolored or misshapen tooth: Enhancing your smile's aesthetics.
-
Support a large filling: When there isn't much natural tooth structure remaining.
-
Anchor a dental bridge: As the supporting structure for a bridge.

At West Sahara Dental, we utilize high-quality materials like porcelain, ceramic, or porcelain-fused-to-metal, chosen to provide both strength and a natural, aesthetic match to your surrounding teeth.

What Are Dental Bridges?
A dental bridge is a fixed dental appliance used to replace one or more missing teeth. As the name suggests, it "bridges" the gap created by missing teeth, literally connecting to adjacent healthy teeth or dental implants. A traditional bridge consists of:
-
Abutment Crowns: These are crowns placed on the natural teeth (or implants) on either side of the gap.
-
Pontic(s): These are the artificial teeth that fill the space of the missing tooth or teeth.
Benefits of Dental Bridges:
-
Restore chewing and speaking ability: Allowing you to enjoy a wider range of foods and communicate clearly.
-
Prevent remaining teeth from shifting: Keeping your natural teeth in their proper positions and maintaining your bite alignment.
-
Maintain facial shape: Preventing the "sunken" appearance that can occur with tooth loss.
-
Provide a fixed, stable solution: Unlike removable partials, bridges are permanently cemented in place.
-
Enhance your smile's aesthetics: Filling gaps for a complete, natural look.

The Crown & Bridge Process at West Sahara Dental
Getting a custom dental crown or bridge at our Spring Valley and Summerlin dental office typically involves two appointments:

Appointment 1: Preparation & Impressions
-
Preparation of the Tooth/Teeth: For a crown, your damaged tooth will be reshaped to create space for the crown. For a bridge, the teeth on either side of the gap will be prepared to accommodate the abutment crowns.
-
Impressions: Precise molds (impressions) of your prepared teeth and surrounding structures are taken. These impressions are sent to a trusted dental lab where your custom crown or bridge will be meticulously fabricated.
-
Temporary Restoration: A temporary crown or bridge will be placed to protect your prepared tooth/teeth and maintain aesthetics while your permanent restoration is being made.

Appointment 2: Placement of Permanent Restoration
-
Removal of Temporary: The temporary restoration is carefully removed.
-
Fitting & Adjustment: Your custom-made permanent crown or bridge is tried in to ensure a perfect fit, comfortable bite, and natural appearance. Minor adjustments will be made if necessary.
-
Permanent Cementation: Once you and our dentist are completely satisfied, the crown or bridge is permanently bonded to your tooth or teeth.

1. How often should I get a dental exam and cleaning? For most healthy individuals, we recommend a comprehensive dental exam and professional cleaning every six months. This allows our Las Vegas dentists and hygienists to detect and address potential issues like cavities or gum disease early, before they become more serious. Your individual needs may vary based on your oral health history.
-
2. What's the difference between a "regular cleaning" (prophylaxis) and "scaling and root planing"?A "regular cleaning" (prophylaxis) is a routine cleaning for healthy gums, removing plaque and tartar above and just below the gum line to prevent gingivitis. Scaling and root planing is a deeper cleaning performed when you have periodontal disease, to remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line and smooth the root surfaces, helping to reattach the gums. Our clinicians will diagnose which type of cleaning is right for you.
-
3. Does a dental cleaning hurt? Most patients find professional teeth cleanings at West Sahara Dental comfortable and pain-free. Our skilled providers are very gentle. If you have sensitive teeth or gums, please let us know, and we can discuss options like topical numbing agents to ensure your comfort.
-
4. Why are X-rays necessary during an exam?Digital X-rays are an essential diagnostic tool that allows our dentists in Las Vegas to see what's invisible during a visual exam. They help detect cavities between teeth, bone loss due to gum disease, impacted teeth, cysts, or other issues in the jawbone. Our digital X-rays use minimal radiation and provide immediate results.
-
5. Can a dental cleaning remove all stains?Professional teeth cleanings are very effective at removing surface stains caused by coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco, leaving your teeth looking brighter. However, deep, intrinsic stains (stains inside the tooth structure) may require other cosmetic treatments like professional teeth whitening or veneers.
-
6. I brush and floss daily, do I still need professional cleanings?Yes! Even with diligent at-home oral hygiene, plaque can harden into tartar in areas your toothbrush and floss can't reach, especially below the gum line. Only a professional dental cleaning can effectively remove tartar, preventing cavities, gum disease, and keeping your smile truly healthy and clean.
